2.0D D4204T

The four-cylinder diesel, which is a Ford unit rather than a Volvo one and brings that family's habits with it. So the fuel pump and injectors are the parts that decide the car, and the particulate filter still needs the right sort of journeys.

Overview

The 2.0D is the D4204T diesel version of the Volvo V70 wagon (P3), sold 2007–2015 with 136 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The Ford-derived fuel system is the weak point, since pump wear can send debris through the injectors, and the filter still needs the right journeys. 4 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

Fuel pump wear and injector contaminationD4204T 2.0D€800–€3,000
Hard starting, power loss under load, and in the worst case a car that stops and won't restart. This is the Ford-derived unit, whose high-pressure pump is lubricated by the fuel passing through it. Wear inside the pump can shed fine metal into the fuel system and damage the injectors. Neglected filter changes and poor fuel both bring it on sooner.
Check: Ask for the fuel-filter record and any fuel-system work, then scan for fuel-pressure faults. Price a car with no filter history as a risk.
FueloccasionalPartly detectableevidence: documented120220k km
Front suspension bush and link wearV70 platform€300–€700
Knocking over bumps and at low speed, vague steering, and uneven wear across the front tyres. These are heavy cars and the front bushes and links wear accordingly. It's ordinary wear rather than a design fault, but it turns up sooner than owners expect and on a set of tyres too.
Check: Drive over rough surfaces listening for a knock, then on a ramp lever each front bush and link for play and look at the inside edges of the tyres.
SuspensioncommonPartly detectableevidence: documented110200k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Ask for the fuel-filter record before anything else, because filter neglect is what turns a pump fault into a full system rebuild.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 2.0D is the four-cylinder option and it's a Ford engine rather than a Volvo one, which matters. The high-pressure pump relies on diesel for its own lubrication, so wear inside it can shed metal through the injectors and turn a manageable repair into a very expensive one. Regular filter changes and decent fuel are the whole defence. It's quieter and cheaper to tax than the D5 and noticeably less special to drive, so buy it on price rather than on preference.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
