1.3 CDTI A13DTC

Fiat's 1.3 MultiJet wearing an Opel code, which means the faults and the parts are shared across two makes. Economy is excellent and the filter needs journeys that a small town car rarely gets.

Overview

The 1.3 CDTI is the A13DTC diesel version of the Opel Corsa hatchback (D), sold 2006–2014 with 95 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The particulate filter suffers on town use, and six-speed cars carry the M32 bearing failure. 5 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

M32 gearbox bearing failureGM/Fiat M32 six-speed manual€700–€1,600
A rumble or whine that changes as you select different gears, worst in fifth and sixth, and eventually a whine under load in every gear. The M32 runs a small oil volume and its end bearings wear, which lets the shafts move and destroys the gear teeth. The factory never scheduled an oil change, so most of these have run their whole lives on the original fill.
Check: Drive at a steady speed in each gear with the window down and listen for a rumble that changes pitch with the gear rather than with road speed. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed, because most owners have never done it.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented100180k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120250k km
Variable-vane turbo actuator stickingvariable-vane turbo€400–€1,200
Sudden loss of power on a hard pull, limp mode that clears on restart, underboost or overboost codes. Soot binds the variable vanes or the actuator linkage seizes.
Check: Do a full-throttle pull in third from 1,500 rpm to the limiter. Hesitation or a drop into limp mode is this fault. Do this twice.
Turbo & intakecommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented130250k km
Steering assistance cutting out while driving, a warning light, or assistance that comes and goes as the column warms up. The motor and its control electronics sit in the column, and the sensor and solder joints inside fail with age and vibration. It's a documented fault that was the subject of recall action in several markets.
Check: Turn the wheel lock to lock while stationary and feel for any moment where the assistance drops out. Ask whether the recall work has been done, because that record is the useful answer here.
SuspensioncommonPartly detectableevidence: manufacturer80170k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

Journey history predicts the filter's condition far better than mileage does. On six-speed cars, gearbox noise is the number that matters and it arrives before the failure.

🇺🇸 United StatesNot sold1.3 CDTI A13DTC was never a US-market car
What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
This is Fiat's 1.3 MultiJet under an Opel code, which means the faults and the parts are shared across two makes and everyone knows them. Ask what the daily journey was, since a small diesel doing school runs gives you a blocked filter rather than a fuel saving. On a six-speed car, listen for a rumble that changes as you select gears, because the M32 bearings fail and the rebuild costs a real share of the car. So check the steering column as you would on the petrol.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
