1.9 TiD Z19DTH

The GM and Fiat 1.9, found in everything from a Vectra to an Alfa 159. It's strong and economical, and the variable-vane turbo sticks when the car has lived on short journeys.

Overview

The 1.9 TiD is the Z19DTH diesel version of the Saab 9-3 sedan (9440), sold 2004–2012 with 150 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The M32 gearbox bearings fail and the rebuild costs a large share of what the car is worth. 4 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

M32 gearbox bearing failureGM/Fiat M32 six-speed manual€700–€1,600
A rumble or whine that changes as you select different gears, worst in fifth and sixth, and eventually a whine under load in every gear. The M32 runs a small oil volume and its end bearings wear, which lets the shafts move and destroys the gear teeth. The factory never scheduled an oil change, so most of these have run their whole lives on the original fill.
Check: Drive at a steady speed in each gear with the window down and listen for a rumble that changes pitch with the gear rather than with road speed. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed, because most owners have never done it.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented100180k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120250k km
Variable-vane turbo actuator stickingvariable-vane turbo€400–€1,200
Sudden loss of power on a hard pull, limp mode that clears on restart, underboost or overboost codes. Soot binds the variable vanes or the actuator linkage seizes.
Check: Do a full-throttle pull in third from 1,500 rpm to the limiter. Hesitation or a drop into limp mode is this fault. Do this twice.
Turbo & intakecommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented130250k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

The engine is good for very high mileage and it's the gearbox that sets the limit on a manual car. Listen before you look at the odometer, because the noise arrives well before the failure.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
This is the GM and Fiat 1.9 that half of Europe ran, so parts are cheap and any independent can work on it. The M32 six-speed manual is the check that matters, and a rumble that changes as you select gears means a rebuild rather than a repair. Ask when the gearbox oil was last done, since the unit runs a small volume and suffers without fresh oil. So confirm the particulate filter history too, and check that the trim you're buying is still available, because some interior parts are now genuinely scarce.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
