2.0 D-4D 1AD-FTV

The smaller of the two Toyota diesels and the safer one. It avoids the head trouble of its 2.2 sibling, so what's left is ordinary modern-diesel care: the particulate filter, the EGR and the turbo actuator.

Overview

The 2.0 D-4D is the 1AD-FTV diesel version of the Toyota Avensis sedan (T27), sold 2009–2015 with 126 PS and manual_6. Manageable at level 2. It avoids the head trouble of the 2.2, so what's left is ordinary modern-diesel care around the filter, the EGR and the turbo. 3 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120–250k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.
EmissionsoccasionalPartly detectableevidence: manufacturer120–250k km
Very little recorded against the bodyAvensis platform€150–€400
Nothing widespread. Ordinary wear on the suspension and interior of a car that often worked as a fleet vehicle. This generation has no endemic body or electrical fault of the kind that defines its European rivals. What turns up is ordinary age and use, which is why the engine choice matters more here than the chassis does.
Check: Check the rear suspension and the boot floor on a ramp for signs of a hard-working life, and look at the interior wear against the stated mileage.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

Journey history matters most. A car that only ever did short trips will have a stressed filter and a coked EGR whatever the odometer says.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 2.0 D-4D is the quieter recommendation in the Avensis range, because it delivers most of the economy of the 2.2 while sidestepping the cylinder-head distortion that gave the bigger engine its reputation. It's not fast, though the torque makes it easy to drive. So treat it as any modern diesel: ask about journey type, look for evidence the EGR and filter have been kept healthy, and avoid a town-only car. Done that way, it's a durable and very cheap thing to run.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
