Harsh or hunting shifts, a shunt between second and third, delayed engagement when cold. BMW declared the fluid a lifetime fill. It's not. Fluid degrades, the valve body wears, and the box eventually fails.
Check: Drive it from cold through every gear, then in manual mode. Ask when the fluid was last changed. "It's sealed for life" means never, and you should price a service in.

Fluid on the bellhousing or the exhaust, gearbox fault warnings, erratic shifting once the level drops. The plastic adapter sleeve carrying the wiring through the case hardens and leaks; the integrated pan gasket does the same.
Check: On the lift, look at the gearbox pan and the bellhousing seam for wet ATF, it's red-brown and unmistakable.

Emissions

DPF clogging and forced regenerationDPF€250–€1,800
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Electrical

Rotary gear selector and vent motor failureXF platform€200–€900
The gear selector failing to rise on start-up, the dashboard vents refusing to rotate open, or both happening together. Both are motorised theatre pieces driven by small actuators, and those actuators fail with age and use. Low battery voltage triggers the same symptoms, so the battery is worth eliminating first.
Check: Start the car and watch the selector rise and the vents rotate. Do it twice, because an intermittent fault is the usual first stage, and check the battery's age before blaming the motors.

Engine

Crankshaft pulley and damper failureAJD-V6 3.0 D€450–€1,200
A knock or rumble from the front of the engine, a wobbling pulley, and belt squeal or a lost belt once it separates. The pulley is a bonded damper and its rubber layer degrades, letting the outer ring move on the hub. If it comes apart it takes the belt and can damage the front of the engine.
Check: With the engine running, look at the crankshaft pulley for any wobble in the outer ring. It's a five-minute check and it's the one Jaguar-specific item on this engine.

Swirl flap wear and ingestionswirl flaps€400–€900
Often none until it happens. Rough running, then in the worst case an engine destroyed by an ingested flap. The intake manifold's swirl flaps run on spindles that wear. A detached flap can be drawn into a cylinder.
Check: Not visible without removing the manifold. Ask whether the flaps have been removed or the manifold replaced. Many well-kept examples have had this done preventively, and that's a selling point.

Every issue is authored once against the part that actually carries it: the engine, the gearbox, the chassis or a shared component, and inherited by every variant that has that part. The badge next to each issue says where it comes from, so you can tell an AJD-V6 problem from an E9x problem.

Evidence tiers. Manufacturer means a recall, technical bulletin or revised part number. Documented means workshop data or multiple independent sources. Reported means owner consensus with no hard confirmation, and never sets a risk level on its own.
